My experience in gallery environments introduced me to another side of the creative process: what happens after an artwork leaves the studio.
Through my experience at the University of Dayton and as a Gallery Coordinator at Stivers School for the Arts, I developed an understanding of the planning, coordination, installation, communication, and community engagement required to bring artwork into a public space.
Gallery work is an important part of my experience because it expanded my understanding of art beyond the individual act of making. It taught me how artwork exists within a larger environment and how decisions about placement, presentation, lighting, organization, and communication can influence the way an audience experiences it.
My gallery experience gave me a broader understanding of the creative ecosystem. It showed me that creative work does not exist in isolation—it is shaped by artists, educators, institutions, audiences, spaces, and the people who help bring those pieces together.
That perspective continues to influence how I approach both my own artwork and my professional design work.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
My time as a Gallery Coordinator at Stivers School for the Arts gave me hands-on experience working within an active arts community and supporting the process of bringing exhibitions to life.
The role required a combination of organization, communication, visual awareness, and attention to detail. I worked within the gallery environment while supporting exhibitions, artists, students, and members of the community.
My responsibilities included supporting the day-to-day operation of the gallery and assisting with the preparation and presentation of exhibitions.
This included experience with: Exhibition coordination | Gallery preparation | Artwork handling | Installation and display | Artist communication | Exhibition organization | Gallery maintenance | Community engagement | Supporting public-facing events | Coordinating within an active arts environment
The experience gave me a better understanding of everything that happens behind an exhibition before an audience ever sees the finished space.
WORKING WITH ARTISTS & EDUCATORS
One of the most meaningful aspects of my time at Stivers was the opportunity to work alongside artists and educators who were deeply invested in creating, teaching, and building a strong artistic community.
Being surrounded by working artists provided a perspective that complemented my formal education. I was able to observe different creative practices, learn from people with varied backgrounds and disciplines, and develop relationships with individuals who continue to influence my work.
Many of those relationships have continued beyond my time at Stivers, and I still look to several of these mentors for guidance and inspiration.
COMMUNITY & CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT
Stivers also showed me the importance of creating an environment where art is accessible and connected to the surrounding community.
Working in a school dedicated to the arts meant that the gallery was not simply a place to display finished work. It was part of a larger educational and creative environment where students, artists, educators, families, and community members could interact with artwork and with one another.
That experience strengthened my appreciation for the role creative spaces can play in developing artists and bringing people together.

EXHIBITION PROCESS
Through the University of Dayton's art environment, I gained exposure to the process of preparing and presenting artwork in a professional setting.
This included developing an understanding of:

Seeing work move from the studio into a gallery environment helped me understand how much consideration goes into the final presentation of an artwork.
CONNECTING STUDIO PRACTICE & EXHIBITION
My University of Dayton experience was particularly valuable because it connected directly to my own development as an artist.
Creating work for critique, exhibition, and public presentation required me to think beyond the object itself. I had to consider how work would be displayed, how individual pieces interacted with one another, and how an audience would experience the work within a larger space.
That perspective continues to influence how I approach visual communication today.
AN ARTS COMMUNITY
The University of Dayton also provided the foundation for much of my broader creative experience. Through my BFA studies and involvement in the university's studio and gallery environment, I was surrounded by artists, professors, technicians, and fellow students who encouraged experimentation and critical thinking.
The experience helped establish the interdisciplinary approach that continues to define my creative practice.
